Upcoming Make-That-A-Take Shows

Okay, I know, I’ve been super-slack with ye olde blog posts recently. It’s January, Abbie and I have just moved house and I’ve been busy with life and shit. Please forgive me.

The collective has heaps of shit coming up over the next few months so let’s get right to it. This post will focus exclusively on the shows that we’ve got fully booked. All of them are righteous bangers so hopefully we’ll see some troops out at a bunch of them!

sweet empire tour

SWEET EMPIRE (NL)

Hard-rocking sing-a-long passionate melodic punk rock’n’rollers from The Netherlands pay their first visit to Dundee as part of their UK tour. With years of experience playing in punk/hxc bands, Sweet Empire bring to mind the likes of Descendents/Dag Nasty/Propagandhi and mix equal parts politics and fun-loving skate-punk into a potent European brew that sees them sharing a label (Shield Recordings) with the likes of Antillectual and The Accelerators. Last year’s “This Season Needs Torches” LP is an absolute banger and well worthy of your attention. To see these guys in the intimate confines of Bar 2 at Kage will be a rare old treat on a cold Monday evening in January.

TAKING CHASE
Edinburgh’s finest eclectic alternative/punk/electroclash rockers make their long-awaited return to Dundee after an absence of more than two years and they bring their new album “Too Many Stories” on Anti-Manifesto with them. Having recently supported the mighty Lucero, Taking Chase are back with a fresh lease of life and have made an absolute banger of an album. Think RX Bandits/Hot Water Music/Cursive and you’re in the ballpark. Good times for sure.

MAXWELL’S DEAD
Cheeky uplifting melodic ska/punk goodness from Carnoustie continuing to grow and develop with the addition of new guitarist Bobby. Maxwell’s Dead have been a band for around eight years and are really beginning to find their feet. “The Arrival” EP is a cracker and they’ll have a super-limited edition split release with The Walking Targets on MTAT in the very near future. For fans of Rancid/NOFX/Left Alone.

THE NEW TIMES
Youthful melodic indie/punk from Dundee-based four piece who will be playing their first MTAT show after having to pull from the Blacklist Royals show in September. Coming across like The Replacements having a rumble with The Gaslight Anthem in a Dundee basement, The New Times will bring a sense of fun to the uplifting bleakness of DIY punk rock.

IT’S NOT OK (ENG)
Emotionally charged pissed off melodic hardcore/pop-punk with driving guitars and heavy songs from London pay their first visit to Scotland to spend five days on the road with UNIFORMS and The Kimberly Steaks. Imagine Off With Their Heads and Leatherface having a tear-up in a London squat and you’re not too far away from the dark romantic melodic punk madness these guys produce.

THE KIMBERLY STEAKS
Full-blast gruff melodic pop-punk goodness like your granny used to make back in the early 90s from the west coast’s finest and driest characters. Think Osker / Operation Ivy with less ska / early Green Day / Crimpshine and you’re pretty much there. Last year’s “Terminal Boredom” EP was one of 2012’s finest. So glad to finally get this gang of roasters out on the road. 2013 promises to be full of “woahs”.

arlissflyer

ARLISS NANCY (USA)
Beautiful, soulful, mesmeric whiskey-drenched country/folk/blues with a DIY punk rock spirit from Fort Collins, Colorado on Death To False Hope/Suburban Home Records playing their first ever show in Scotland. If late-night drinking with your friends while listening to Lucero/Drive-By Truckers/The Hold Steady is your bag, then you are guaranteed to be into these guys. This should be a very special Sunday night treat indeed.

THE BARENTS SEA
Newly rejuvenated and refocussed soaring anthemic indie rock’n’roll goodness from the project led by the inimitable Grant George play their first ever show in Kage. Expect introspective yet ultimately uplifting indie rock in a Gaslight Anthem/Tigers Jaw/Death Cab For Cutie style. The perfect band to support Arliss Nancy to my mind.

TERRAFRAID
Freshly gone full-band, Terrafraid feature members of Bonehouse and From The Tracks and play melancholic yet joyous 80s dream-pop and 90s emo influenced danceable indie rock’n’roll with soaring melodies and vocal harmonies. This will be the first time we’ve put them on and we’re very excited about it.

MARK McCABE
Acoustic punk rock troubadour from Angus via Paris via the USA and back again, Mark McCabe is one of the most charming acoustic singer/songwriters in the country. Having played all over with the likes of The Flatliners, Lemuria, Chris T-T and most recently a Scottish jaunt with Frank Turner, Mark is in great company and is not to be missed.

A VERY SPECIAL EVENING OF PUNK ROCK MADNESS with…

THE MURDERBURGERS
The hardest working and most prolific band in punk rock return to Dundee after their legendary set packed full of insanity at BYAF VI as part of the UK leg of their mammoth 50+ date European tour. Last year’s “How To Ruin Your Life” LP was one of the best records of 2012 and saw the band tour endlessly throughout the UK, Europe and a spirited jaunt throughout with USA with pop-punk peers Dear Landlord. Scotland has rarely, if ever, produced a full-blast pop-punk band of such calibre and quality. We are very pleased, as ever, to host them and this will be a show that you won’t want to miss as who knows when they’ll be back? New LP should be ready for tour too!

http://themurderburgers.bandcamp.com/

THE WALKING TARGETS
Disgustingly awesome for being so young, The Walking Targets are a three-piece punk rock band from Edinburgh who play the sort of Hot Water Music/Descendents influenced gruff melodic punk that is grizzled beyond their tender years. This is the “offical” release show of their incoming split CD with Maxwell’s Dead and is one stop on the road as they tour with The Murderburgers on the UK leg of their European tour.

http://thewalkingtargets.bandcamp.com/

MAXWELL’S DEAD
Arguably the cheekiest bunch of ska peddling melodic punk rock roasters this side of early 90s Gilman Street, Maxwell’s Dead are a super-tight punk/rock/reggae/ska mash-up from Carnoustie with a wealth of experience under their young studded belts. This is the release night of their split release with The Walking Targets on MTAT and should be a proper good time party all round. You’d be well advised to keep your eye on your beer as you’re skanking!

TRAILS (ENG)
Super-hooky harmony-laden tech-punk-shredding madness from Guildford coming on like RX Bandits, Biffy and Propagandhi in a tear-up return to Dundee for the first time since their awesome set supporting Elway back in September. In the midst of a UK tour promoting their forthcoming 10″ EP “Signs”, these troops are one of the tighest bands you’re every likely to be able to dance to.

http://trailsofficial.bandcamp.com/

ROBOT DOCTORS
First ever show from the new Dundee five-piece who blend a love of both the infectious melody and the thirst for balls-out rock. You can expect a hyperactive live show the hooks that’ll be spinning round your head for days. With ex-members of State Of Affairs, Cole Appleyard and The Barents Sea, you know you’re going to get hearty riffage, soaring melodies and plenty of sing-a-long good times.
